The AI & Society Institute

The AI & Society Institute aims to promote the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence by studying its interactions with society.

An interdisciplinary, impact-oriented academic institute, it was co-founded by the École normale supérieure (ENS), Université Paris-Dauphine, Université PSL, and the IAS Institute Association. Its mission is to:
a) conduct research of excellence (both fundamental and impact-driven);
b) train a new generation of students, researchers, and practitioners;
c) foster the responsible use of AI for the benefit of all.
The Institute is hosted at ENS but works closely with the entire PSL community, in particular the Paris School of AI (PSAI).

Areas of Focus

The IIAS plans to expand and further structure its program for the 2025–2026 academic year around three complementary thematic pillars. These priorities were chosen to reflect the diversity of challenges raised by the development of artificial intelligence and their strategic importance for research, education, and societal action. Each of these pillars is closely interconnected:

  1. Governance and democracy define the ethical and institutional framework within which AI develops and operates;
  2. Health and sustainability illustrate concrete and priority areas of application serving the common good;
  3. Economic and social development enables the analysis of the profound transformations of societies and economies driven by these technologies.
